A Legend Has Passed Away
Today, on September 2, the world lost three-time Olympic champion, legendary freestyle wrestler, and honorary president of the International Alysh Federation, Alexander Medved.
He was 87 years old.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and the entire Belarusian nation for this irreparable loss.
Alexander Medved won Olympic gold in three different weight categories—up to 97 kg, over 97 kg, and over 100 kg. In 1972, he was chosen as the flag bearer for the USSR delegation at the Olympic opening ceremony.
In 2001, Medved was recognized as Belarus’ greatest athlete of the 20th century. Four years later, he was named the greatest freestyle wrestler in history and became a member of the FILA (United World Wrestling) Hall of Fame.
